ABSTRACT
The article explores how the British sociologist Richard Hoggart articulates, in A Local Habitation, an autobiographical account of his childhood spent in the popular suburbs of Leeds and a scientific knowledge project. In this study we analyze ways of overshooting this dualism in a “sociological novel”, in particular through the issue of the relationship between the individual and the collective. The author then provides an analysis of the distinctive features of Hoggart’s sociology, based on a “thick description” of English working classes, while highlighting typifications and domains of relevance.
